PROJECTS

Composting

In coordination with the nutritional team, Head Start is working to reduce waste output and promote recycling of natural resources. The classrooms have one gallon containers to put lunch scraps into and then at the end of the day, the designator compost person brings it out to the pile.  Throughout the course of the year, children watch their food waste break down into highly nutritional matter that will be sprinkled into the garden and the potting soil. This is a great way to integrate education of the food system and the natural life-cycle into the regular classroom routine.

Projects We Need Help With

3 Compost Bin System

Garden Literacy

Head Start Discovery Garden Program promotes the use of senses and scientific devices to learn about the natural and physical world.  Through observing and monitoring living things our students observe life cycle changes and necessities.  They classify, predicit, gather data, make hypotheses, and explain outcomes.

Summer Programming

Head Starts A.W.A.R.E students water, weed, and explore the garden in the mornings. Our summer volunteer teachers two titled "garden gnomes" about plant life cycles, maintenance, and tastes.

Potting and Planting Day

Students learn the steps necessary for planting a seed.  They come to understand what a seed needs to grow/germinate.

These seedling will then be planted by the students into our garden mid-May, and will be sold at the Healthy By Design Garden Market or used in our kitchen.

Nutritional Enhancement

Head Start provides highly nutritious meals and a snacks to our students.  Meal time is a vital part of the day, and we encourage our students to really experience their food by discussing tastes, smells, and textures.

Running Plant Trellis:

This is a quick day project that we want to establish before July 24.  The sooner we get this in the quicker our squash plants will be able to crawl up it.

Pea- Teepee

This addition will offer a fun sitting space for students to become engulfed in exploration.
