ABOUT OUR GARDEN

The  Head  Start Discovery Garden was created to provide a fun and interesting way for low income preschoolers to learn about plants, nature, the environment and science.  The children plant the seeds and start the garden, and the returning children in the fall will harvest and use the produce in their meals througout the year.

Planting and tending a garden is one way that children can learn about their world and experience a whole new range of concepts and vocabulary.  The garden is incorporated into the curriculum throughout the school year.  Once school gets out our summer workshops encourage and educate community members about how to grow their own food at home in a resourceful way.

The garden expands gets our students tastebuds.   Research shows children’s taste preferences are most actively developed between the ages of three and five. The pre-school age is an ideal time to develop a taste for healthy foods.

The extra food that will not be used in our kitchen will be sold at the Healthy By Design Farmers Market for an affordable price.  We believe that healthy fresh food is right, not a privelage.
